Dauphine London Student Leads Seminar Series on Finance & Investing at UCL

Marin Failler, second year student at Université Paris Dauphine - London, leads a series of finance-focused workshops

Marin Failler, a second-year student at Université Paris Dauphine - London, studying for a Bachelor's in Economics and Management, has been leading a series of finance-focused workshops for his peers. Since arriving in London, he has been dedicated to equipping fellow students with essential financial knowledge to enhance their academic studies. Marin is also the Vice-Chair of the Dauphine Finance Society, where he plays a key role in organising initiatives to help students develop their finance and investment skills.

Taking full advantage of the academic partnership between Dauphine London and UCL, which enables Dauphine students to join their societies and clubs, and access a broader academic and professional network, Marin joined various societies at UCL, including Entrepreneur, Football, and Asset Management, which he found incredibly enriching. Determined to create a similar experience for his peers at Dauphine London, he organised a series of finance-focused workshops through the Dauphine Finance Society, hosting them at UCL to further strengthen collaboration between the two institutions.

Building on his experiences—an eight-week Asset Management Boot Camp at UCL, a Stock Pitch competition, a Spring Week at Barclays, and a summer internship in private equity—he recognised the importance of practical financial knowledge for students aspiring to secure internships in top-tier investment banks, private equity firms, and hedge funds.

“At the beginning of the year, I organised a workshop on CVs, cover letters, and interviews,” he explains. “But acing those will only help candidates pass the screening stage of the recruitment process. The further you get, the more technical the interviews become.” With the competitive nature of securing finance internships in London, he sought to equip Dauphine students with the skills necessary to stand out.

His latest workshop, "How to Value a Company?", was designed to teach students fundamental valuation techniques used by investment banks, private equity firms, and hedge funds. The session covered essential topics such as Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis, comparable company analysis, precedent transactions analysis, valuation multiples, and key financial ratios. Held at UCL, the 90-minute event was a resounding success, highlighting the benefits of Dauphine London's collaboration with UCL and the opportunities it provides for students to engage with a broader academic community.

“After talking to the students who attended, I believe they enjoyed the workshop and learned a lot, even though it was quite technical,” he shared.

With more workshops on the horizon, the Dauphine Finance Society continues to provide students with valuable insights into the finance industry, preparing them for future opportunities in the competitive London market.
